I remember when I was in high school one of my friend's grandmother’s was a substitute teacher for a day. She was an older woman and really interesting to talk with. One thing she said has recently come back to my head. She said, “Everyday, no matter how you feel, get up and put on your lipstick.” At the time, it didn’t really resonate a whole lot with me. I thought she was just talking up a 50’s notion. But as I have been on this journey of self-love and acceptance, it’s made a lot more sense to me.
Who's got time for that?
Sometimes feeling and looking your best is simply easier said than done. Life gets busy with work, school, kids, etc. And in the shuffle of all that, very often, we let ourselves go. As women, we are often too tired to doll up and many times we are running on vapors just to get through the day.
But Girl! It’s amazing what taking 30 seconds to apply a little lipstick can do for your self-esteem. It’s almost like those 90”s movies when they would take the nerdy girls glasses off and let her hair down and suddenly she’s a supermodel!
No seriously! There’s actual proof to back me up here.
A Huffington Post article talked about how the “Today Show” style editor, Bobbie Thomas, found that women in a rape crisis seemed to have their spirits lifted by a simple tube of lipstick. “It validated her, said Thomas, “I could see the spark in her face. She felt worthy of self-care.”
The way women feel about lipstick and how it makes us feel can even reveal the true state of the economy. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, economists have noted something they called the “lipstick effect.” Which basically means that during even during the toughest times, the sales of thing s like cars, homes, even furniture may decline but the sales of cosmetics will rise during that time as women seek that little nugget of self-appreciation.
Who knew little old lipstick could do so much, right?
So, let’s talk girl. When’s the last time you prettied up that pucker? I’ll be honest for me, it had been months. I seriously reserved anything that took more effort than washing my face for special occasions. But when I decided to start putting on a little lipstick to brighten my face, my mood amazing followed suit.
REAL TALK! Most of the images you see of me I’m wearing nothing more than lipstick, particularly red lipstick. When I wear red lipstick I feel like “Diva Lux.” I feel like I deserve a cute dress, pinning my hair up, etc. I feel a little more like me.
Maybe that’s what my friend's grandmother was talking about. Maybe putting on that lipstick every day isn’t about being pleasing anyone else. But about building yourself up to be better for not just your family and career but for YOU. Just maybe it’s about putting on a coat of self-care every morning so that you can field the curve balls life throws at you.
I don’t know, but, I’ve decided that’s what I am taking from it. So in honor of that, I want you to challenge yourself.
For 5-days, I challenge you to get up every day and put on some lipstick, and hell, make it red lipstick. We’ll call it the 5-day Red Lips Challenge. See how you feel during those 5-days and if it’s a feeling you’ve been missing. And if you feel good, show me. Post your pics on Instagram with the hashtag #DivaRedLipsChallenge. I’ll repost and share also. So dig out that lipstick and start letting out your inner Diva. Hope to see you on the gram!
